The
Belt Makers' signature piece
Potted history
Our British Spirit was originally inspired by the sense of team spirit that was exhibited by the players, supporters and volunteers that were ‘Team GB’ at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. When the volunteer Games Makers enabled London 2012 to happen, their selfless energy and skills were donated so that we could all benefit from the history being made.
Across the UK, throughout much of 2022, British spirit was on display in great strength, as we joined in with the Commonwealth-wide celebrations of the historic Platinum Jubilee of our late monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Following her sad passing later the same year, huge amounts of patriotic fondness were displayed again.
In May 2023 much pride and patriotism were displayed once more; the red, white and blue flags, bunting and other decorations festooned the streets and our shop window, for the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.
The United Kingdom hasn't witnessed this level of national pride in over three generations.
The making
We love to make our British Spirit belt and are very proud of it. The Raise style enables us to safely secure all the start and finish ends for each of the three decorative thread colours on the inside.
The red, white and blue threads represent the colours on the British Union Jack, our officially recognised flag since 1908.
Each of those red, white and blue stitches - always in that order - are painstakingly hand sewn with a long back stitch, evenly along the full length of each side and around the tip. When done correctly this produces a candy cane style of striping along the inside.
A piece of thinned leather will sit between the two rows of candy stripes and the two layers can then be sewn onto a base piece, producing the raised effect. This painstaking process takes several days.
Involving approximately 1600 individual hand stitches, this belt will certainly catch the eye. It looks amazing and is well worth the investment.
